who we are
Real Pie Company is a niche artisan bakery that celebrates the unique agricultural bounty of the Sacramento region. Our handcrafted, high-quality products showcase locally-grown produce in rustic and creative ways. Emphasis is placed on our pies, which are created with handmade, all-butter crusts and fresh, seasonal fruit and nuts; but we also offer an enticing selection of cream pies, produce-focused cakes, tarts, galettes and cookies. To complement the dessert offerings, we bake meat and vegetarian pot pies, hand pies, quiches and other seasonal savory pastries. We also offer pie milkshakes, composed of the customers’ choice of pie and locally-made ice cream.
Real Pie Company is very lucky to be located at the epicenter of California agriculture, and we source our seasonal ingredients from a wonderful array of small family farms throughout the region. We have a passion for educating our customers about these small farms, who provide Sacramentans with an extraordinary array of products. To that end, we proudly feature a large selection of regional farm trail maps in the shop, as well as local farmers’ market schedules and information about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs.
Fred & Kira
Husband-and-wife team Kira O’Donnell Babich and Fred Babich are partners and owners of Real Pie Company.
A former baker and pastry chef at Northern California restaurants such as Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Ristorante Piatti in Sonoma/Yountville and the Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford, Kira was deeply influenced by her grandparents, whose farm in Humboldt County was the scene of many happy childhood memories. Grandma Margaret Visser was a prolific and talented pie-maker, passing on her love of baking to Kira.
Kira holds a winemaking degree from the University of California at Davis, and is the founder of the Sacramento chapter of Slow Food USA. A lifelong passion for food and agriculture propelled her into communications positions within the University of California’s statewide Small Farm Program; the California Walnut Board, the UC Davis Department of Viticulture & Enology; and the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. Kira has maintained an active food and wine writing career over the past two decades, and has contributed to publications such as Sunset magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento magazine.
Fred is a commercial helicopter pilot with flight, instrument and advanced ground instructor certificates. He holds a Chartered Financial Consultant designation and has founded and operated several successful small businesses.
